About The ZYG 808

The ZYG 808 (pronounced 'Zee Why Gee' Eight-0h-Eight)  is a world-class, Grammy nominated Hip-Hop Jazz artist. With skills and credits as a drummer/percussionist, composer, Emcee, singer, producer, and vibraphonist, ZYG 808 has logged some impressive accomplishments for any performer, let alone somebody born in 2003.

With influences including Art Blakey, John Blackwell, Jr, J Cole, Max Roach, Tito Puente, Lionel Hampton, Rakim, Joe Cuba, Quest Love, Big Daddy Kane, Clyde Stubblefield, and Hopsin, the jazz, soul, Caribbean, hip-hop elements are strong in his artistry. At age 7 he made his debut as a studio session player, contributing African percussion to the Urban Music Award-winning house music album, "DEEP Soul Chants & Hollers". As a 10 year-old, The ZYG 808 had aspirations towards stand-up comedian, and even had folks cracking up at open mics around south coast, Massachusetts with his razor sharp timing and sense of humor. At age 11 he began headlining at the Boston Jazz Fest, wowing the audience with his drumming. At 13 he became the percussionist and vocalist for Grammy nominated soul-funk band The GroovaLottos and has been touring with them ever since. Around the same time, he began MCing with his cousin JJNice of the TMK Squad, making demos in the basement. His love of language, wry sense of humor and irony, together with his background in jazz gave rise to a philosophical Emcee of considerable lyrical skill and flow. In other words, he's nice on the mic and his lyrics can get deep.

808 is a reference to the classic hip-hop drum machine, the Roland 808. 808 got added to his name during the summer of 2017 when ZYG was street performing in Boston, playing a cocktail drum kit and rapping at the same time and an audience member declared, “That kid’s the real 808!”. In the song “El Concerto” ZYG reference his street performing, “… you laugh ‘cause I’m a busker, which makes me a hustler, steady on my grind, check me and you’ll find…”. In late 2017 he and other members of the Soul Poet's Syndicate, Young $umo and JJNice, went in the studio and created the anti-opioid anthem "FLIPPIN" .In 2018 he co-founded the label  SOUL POET’s RECORDS under his father’s Liberation Multimedia. He is an active member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe's Youth Council as well as a member of the Universal Zulu Nation.
